About the plant
The lime belongs to the Rutaceae family and is also known as West Indian or Mexican or sour lime. The lime originally comes from Malaysia and is said to have been brought to Europe by the Moors, from where it found its way to the New World in the course of the 16th century. Today the lime is grown in Italy, West Indies, USA, Mexico and South America. It does not tolerate cold climates and it needs a winter temperature of 15 ° C, preferably even 18-20 ° C. The Latin term 'Aurantifolia' refers to its orange leaves. It has its place among citrus fruits. Limes are smaller than lemons while containing twice as much juice. In contrast to the lemon, the soft lime peel stays green even when ripe. The smell is fresh, sweet and aromatic, the juice is very sour, aromatic and somewhat bitter. The lime tree becomes crooked and prickly and reaches a height of about 2 meters. During the flowering period, the small yellowish or white flowers spread their scent throughout the area. The flowers have five petals and five sepals. They hang on slender stems arranged in tufts. The honey from the flowers is considered to be the most aromatic and precious in the world.
