About the Plant

The mastic tree is an evergreen shrub that is native mainly to the eastern Mediterranean countries. Under the bark of the tree there are numerous resin glands that contain the precious mastic resin. The tree has dark green, elongated leaves and small red to black fruits.

The resin has been valued since ancient times for its medicinal, cosmetic and culinary uses and is used as a flavoring for chewing gum.

A fatty base oil is extracted from the berries of the mastic tree by cold pressing.

Characteristics

Mastic oil is rich in essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, as well as vitamins and antioxidants. It has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties and is quickly absorbed into the skin without leaving a heavy greasy film.
