QUALITIES: Stimulating and warming oil. Helpful in a muscle rub especially as one gets older and less mobile. Add to massage oil and use before and after exercise to warm and tone the muscles. Appetite stimulant, aids digestion, and circulation. It has a cooling effect in treating fevers. Vaporise during the winter to treat colds and flu like illnesses. Ideal to put in the bath at the first signs of a cold. Good for investigative work - Helps one stand their ground, good for aggressive sports and endurance. Pepper is one of the most important and oldest of the spices.

The Greeks as far back as the fourth century BC knew about it .The Romans valued it highly and imported large quantities from the East.

A trailing / climbing vine like shrub from the Piperaceae family, native to Southern India. It can reach a height of eight metres, the flowers are whitish, perfect, and arranged on elongated spikes. The fruit is globular drupe of red colour when ripe. A vine has to be between six and seven years old before a crop can be harvested. Black pepper is the dried, whole, unripe fruit of this plant, white pepper consists of the ripe fruit from which the dark hull has been removed. A fully-grown vine covers its support like a curtain and will produce a yield of five to six kilos of fruit.

On steam distillation crushed black pepper yields from 1 to 2.6 per cent (depending on the age of the peppercorns) essential oil. The main chemical components are, pinene, phellandrene, limonene, piperonal, dihydrocarveol, caryophyllene and piperidine.
