ABOUT THE PLANT

Oregano belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is a wild relative of marjoram, which is also native to Central Europe. The plant is a sturdy, bushy, small shrub that reaches a height of about 90 cm. The multi-branched stem bears dark green oval leaves and the small flowers are white or pink. Oregano originally comes from Greece and is one of the Mediterranean spices. In the kitchen it is often used as an ingredient for pizza. In England, oregano was popular as an ingredient in snuff and as a perfume in sachets.

According to legend, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, created the aromatic oregano to symbolize joy and planted the herb in her garden on Mount Olympus.

Although marjoram and oregano come from the same plant family, the ingredients and properties are completely different. Marjoram has a relaxing effect and oregano brings energy and strength.

The main ingredients are phenols, the effects of which are described as stimulating and promoting blood circulation, but also as antibacterial and antiviral, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving.
