About the plant

Basil has its roots in the Greek word "basileus", which means something like king and thus describes the extraordinarily high rank of this plant that it held within the ancient Mediterranean civilizations.

Basil, a member of the mint family, is characterized by a variety of species. The sweet basil is the most common. The sun-hungry spice plant originally comes from India, but is cultivated all over Europe. The mint family is an annual plant that grows bushy and grows up to 50 cm high. The main chemotypes are, depending on the origin of the plant, linalol and estragole, which are described as effective anticonvulsants and are therefore used in naturopathy as nerve and stomach tonic.
