QUALITIES: Stimulating and refreshing. Useful muscle rub. Encourages digestion. Said to be an aphrodisiac. Widely used in preparation of many dishes especially in the East, it is known as Chinese parsley. Blends well with Bergamot, Clary sage, Pettitgrain, Sandalwood and the spice oils.
Although associated with the East the herb originated in the southern Mediterranean. Coriander has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back 3000 years. It is even mentioned in the Bible in Exodus 16:31, where manna is described as "small round and white like coriander seed." The ancient Hebrews originally used cilantro root as the bitter herb in the symbolic Passover meal.
A member of the Umbelliferae family, it is a strongly aromatic herb reaching up to one metre in height. It has bright green, flat leaves and umbels of white lacy flowers, followed by round pale green seeds which then turn pale brown. Native to Europe and Western Asia and is cultivated worldwide.
